As we reach the midpoint of 2025, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and reevaluate the goals we set at the start of the year. Whether you scribbled them in a journal, mapped them on a vision board, or outlined them in a detailed planner, those aspirations likely reflected both your professional ambitions and personal dreams. Now, with five months still ahead, there's an opportunity not just to assess progress but to refocus, realign, and renew your commitment to what matters most. By utilizing your Psychological Capital, as discussed in our January 16th blog—which comprises hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy—you can enhance your ability to achieve your goals.
Why Reevaluating Goals Matters
Goals aren't static. Life changes, priorities shift, and circumstances evolve. What felt urgent in January may now feel less relevant, while other goals you hadn't anticipated might have emerged. That’s why goal reevaluation is not just helpful—it’s essential.
Routinely checking in with your goals gives you a chance to:
Celebrate progress - even the small wins.
Identify roadblocks and patterns that may be hindering your progress.
Adjust timelines or expectations based on current realities.
Reignite your motivation by reconnecting with your “why.”
Personal & Professional Goals Check-In
Take a few moments to revisit the goals you set earlier this year. Did you have both personal and professional goals? By breaking them down into these two categories — personal and professional — you can be more intentional in aligning your actions.
Ask yourself:
What have I accomplished so far?
What still needs attention?
Are these goals still meaningful to me?
What habits or routines have supported my progress, and which ones have stalled it?
You might find that you've exceeded expectations in one area while others have taken a backseat. That’s okay. Life is not linear, and growth rarely happens evenly across all fronts.
If you need a worksheet to rewrite your goals, the following example can be used.
Where will I be in 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years?
Personally | Professionally | Financially | Spiritually | Physically | |
1 year | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. |
3 years | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. |
5 years | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. | Goal: Action Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. |
Be Honest—But Be Kind Reviewing Progress toward your Goals
It’s easy to feel frustrated if you haven’t hit certain milestones. Perhaps you haven’t written that book, launched that side project, or met your health goals. However, remember that goals are not just boxes to check. They’re guideposts to help you move with intention. Give yourself grace. A setback isn't a failure—it's information. It's an opportunity to learn, reassess, and adjust your course.
Compassion doesn’t mean complacency. It means acknowledging where you are with honesty and kindness and then asking, “Where do I want to go next, and how can I get there?”
Five Months of Possibility to Achieve Your Goals
There are still five months left in 2025. That’s more than 150 days or more than 3,500 hours. Plenty of time to make meaningful strides toward what you truly want—whether that’s advancing your career, improving your health, strengthening relationships, or deepening your self-care practices.
Use this moment to:
Refine your goals to match who you are today.
Create a plan that is both flexible and focused.
Establish a regular rhythm of checking in, either weekly or monthly.
Celebrate your progress and course-correct when needed.
Your Mid-Year Call to Action
Think of this as your invitation to reset with purpose. Take a deep breath. Reopen your goals. Reconnect with what lights you up. Ask yourself what one small step you can take today that moves you forward.
Remember, it’s never too late to recommit to your dreams. Each day is a fresh opportunity to take one step closer to the life you envision. You have what it takes to finish the year proud, purposeful, and inspired. As nurses, we commit to caring for others, but to do so, we need to care for ourselves. You’ve got time. You’ve got the drive. And you’ve got the chance to finish 2025 strong.
What have you learned about your goals so far this year? Share your reflections, wins, or reset plans in the comments—we’d love to hear your journey.
